The CARE Investment Philosophy
The investment philosophy where good behaviour and smart decisions make all the difference.
The “C” in CARE stands for “Core” investments. The Core of a CARE portfolio is made up of a range of Exchange Traded Funds (commonly called ETF’s) and fixed interest fund managers that are multi-sector, multimanager securities and funds that are invested according to a client’s risk profile. The Core investments, together with a client’s risk profile are a strategic mix of Australian shares and bonds and overseas shares and bonds including property and other assets.
The “A” in CARE stands for “Active” investments. This is a tactical blend of ETF investments which includes Australian Shares, Global Shares, Emerging Marketing, Global Small Companies, and Gold. The Active component within the portfolio is designed to smooth out the volatility of each sector and provide you with a nice consistent return overall.
The “R” in CARE stands for “Reserves” including risk management. The Reserves component offers liquidity and cash to the portfolio which provides a necessary balance overall. The CARE process manages two key risks, the first by insuring assets are allocated according to a client’s risk profile and secondly by providing cash reserves so that the risk of having to sell assets in market periods that are declining is mitigated. Reserves are an important component of CARE where we set aside 4 years of Reserves, especially for retirees, because as markets drop, if you don’t have enough Reserves clients may panic and sell. The Reserve is a good buffer for peace of mind and to assist clients with the cash flow they need during these investment market downturns.
Finally, we come to “E” in CARE which stands for “Enhanced Returns” portfolio, this is simply made up of single listed Australian shares also known as the blue-chip companies which are fairly stable and produce good dividends for clients. Investors also have the option of investing in an international share portfolio managed by a specialist manger.

How it works
While everyone’s financial needs are different, our advice is generally provided in two stages.
Stages 1: Initial Planning and Recommendations
The initial planning is usually conducted over two to three meetings, but this may vary depending on your financial situation. During the first meeting we gather information about your current financial position, talk about your goals and uncover the key financial concerns and gaps that you have. No charge is payable for this meeting. Once you decide to proceed a commitment fee is payable.
The second meeting we will present you with a high-level overview of your current financial position. We will discuss with in detail including opportunities, threats, and possible strategies before agreeing on the most suitable strategies and investments.
If you decide you would like us to proceed with these strategies and investments, a portion of total fee is payable.
The third meeting, a comprehensive written recommendation (Statement of Advice) is presented to you. If you are happy to proceed, paperwork will be provided and signed at that meeting and the balance of the upfront fee will be due.
The upfront fee is a once-off charge that can be paid by cheque, direct debit, credit card or deducted from your investments. You would not pay any entry or exit fees from the investments funds we recommend, and we would not receive any upfront commission from these funds. Your Statement of Advice will provide details of all fees and charges in writing for your records.
Stage 2: Ongoing Review, Planning Recommendations
Our ongoing services provide you with the expert guidance and implementation that will bring your financial strategy to life. These services include:
- recommendations for your portfolio monitoring the shares and managed funds in your portfolio and recommending adjustments where necessary
- Providing a full valuation of your portfolio, as well as news and information on a regular basis
- Annual review of your insurance policies, to make sure you are protected as your lifestyle and financial situation changes over time.
- Monitoring income cashflow from your investments, to determine if targets are being met
- Be available to discuss change of circumstances in between annual, half-yearly or quarterly progress assessment.
